At Nirschl Orthopaedic Center in Arlington, Virginia, we understand the intricacies of hip conditions, such as snapping hip syndrome, and we effectively treat them. Often a result of overuse, snapping hip syndrome causes a distinctive catching sensation as a tight muscle slides over a bony knob in the hip joint, such as the top of the thigh bone (greater trochanter), the sit bones (ischial tuberosity) or the pelvis (iliopectineal eminence).

The most common cause of snapping hip syndrome is tightness in the muscles and tendons surrounding the hip. This type of muscle tightness frequently affects dancers and other athletes who participate in activities that involve repetitive bending at the hips. Another possible cause of the snapping is a loose piece of cartilage or bone fragment floating in the joint space.

When to See a Physician

Usually, snapping hip syndrome is not serious, but it may cause hip pain or lead to tendinitis or bursitis. In general, it is best to see a physician if the symptoms persist beyond four to six weeks.

To diagnose your condition, a hip specialist at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center will ask about your medical history and symptoms and perform a thorough physical exam. From there, your physician may also order imaging tests, such as X-rays or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to further evaluate the condition.

Treatment Options for Snapping Hip Syndrome

In many cases, snapping hip syndrome can be treated conservatively with ice applications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Your physician may also suggest a customized physical therapy program consisting of targeted stretches and strengthening exercises. To address more severe symptoms, hip arthroscopy is a highly successful treatment, as explained in this video: Snapping Hip Syndrome – Dr. Derek Ochiai – YouTube.
