The Foundation
The Nirschl Sportsmedicine Education and Research Foundation is known throughout the East Coast for its research into the causes, prevention and treatment of orthopaedic disorders. The Foundation is a non-profit corporation established for scientific, educational, and charitable purposes. Its primary purposes are the development and support of ongoing educational and research programs in orthopaedic medicine, sports medicine, and joint reconstruction.
For 20 years, we have been investing in the good health of our community. We are proud to offer would-class health care, state of the art healthcare technology, and the highest caliber medical team.
The Foundation has profoundly influenced the practice of orthopaedics, from diagnosis to rehabilitation, and has led to exciting advances in surgical techniques that are used today by orthopaedists everywhere. For example, the Nirschl Elbow Surgical Technique is now accepted world wide as the surgical treatment of choice for patients with tennis elbow.
Since its inception, the foundation has helped people of all ages remain physically active through orthopaedic research and education. It continues to pursue its goals of:
Designing and validating surgical and rehabilitation techniques
Producing and publishing scientifically validated research in leading medical and scientific journals.
The Foundation will accomplish its scientific, educational, and charitable purposes by supporting two one-year post graduate fellowships for licensed orthopaedic surgeons, concentrating on sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery.
Education is an essential component of The Foundation and Fellowship activities. Our Fellowship program is the only orthopedic sports medicine fellowship program in the Washington DC Metropolitan area that has been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education ("ACGME"). The fellowship program is designed to expose each Fellow to all aspects of a practice concentrating on sports medicine and orthopaedic surgery including education, research, and clinical and surgical services. The program is well balanced between upper and lower extremities and complemented by a wide variety of patient populations including recreational, high school, college, and professional athletes.
Each Fellow is required to participate in at least one research project selected by the supervising physician after consultation with the Fellow. The results of the research are published in one or more medical journals of general circulation and may be presented at one or more medical conferences. Publication and presentations are made in the names of both the fellow and the attending faculty member. Past research includes landmark studies in: rotator cuff disease and repair, tennis elbow surgery and ACL injuries.
