ERIC J. GUIDI, M.D.
Dr. Guidi is a graduate of Bucknell University and Albany Medical College. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic
Institute in New York and is fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and
treats disorders to both upper and lower extremities, utilizing both non-surgical and surgical treatments to help his patients return to their active lifestyles.
Dr. Guidi serves as the Co-Director of the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Nirschl Orthopaedic Center/Virginia Sportsmedicine Institute. He was
assistant to the Washington Redskins Football team physician and continues to work as the team physician to many local teams. He is attending physician to the Wolftrap
Center for the Performing Arts and Arena Stage Theater. Dr. Guidi also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Georgetown University Medical
Center, as well as on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He was recently recognized by his peers as one of the area's "Top
Doctors for 2008" in Northern Virginia Magazine.
ROBERT P. NIRSCHL, M.D., M.S.
Dr. Nirschl is a graduate of the Medical College of Wisconsin (Marquette University) and received his orthopaedic surgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
He holds a masters degree in orthopaedic surgery from the University of Minnesota. In the 1970s, his research of sporting techniques sparked new treatments in the area
of tendon injuries. Dr. Nirschl's approach to the care of injuries in the elbow, shoulder, and knee are internationally recognized. He is the founding partner of NOC and
the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship program. Dr. Nirschl is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and serves as the Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic
Surgery at Georgetown University School of Medicine. He served on the Board of Councilors for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, The American Orthopaedic
Society for Sports Medicine, and as President of the Virginia Orthopaedic Society.
Dr. Nirschl was one of the founding members of the United States Tennis Association Sports Science Committee and served as an Orthopaedic Surgery Consultant to the
President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports during President Reagan's Administration. Dr. Nirschl's Biography is profiled in Marquis Who's Who in "Medicine,"
in "America" and in the "World." He holds four U.S. Patents.
DEREK H. OCHIAI, M.D.
Dr. Ochiai is a graduate of Cornell University, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and is fellowship trained in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery. He completed his orthopaedic residency at Albany Medical Center and his fellowship training at the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center and Georgetown University. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and specializes in injuries to the upper and lower extremities including: hip, knee, and shoulder arthroscopy. Dr. Ochiai uses both non-surgical and surgical techniques to help his patients return to their active lifestyles.
Dr. Ochiai was awarded the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) Traveling Fellowship in Advanced Arthroscopic Techniques. He is an Associate Master Instructor of Hip Arthroscopy at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago and a clinical faculty member for the Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center for Sports Medicine and Joint Reconstruction. He is the Sports Medicine Consultant to Inside Lacrosse magazine. Dr. Ochiai is a member of AANA, the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine AOSSM), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).
Dr. Root is a Northern Virginia native and attended Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology. After graduating from Princeton
University with Honors, Dr. Root attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine where she was awarded the prestigious, merit based Canby
Robinson Scholarship. In addition, she was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society. Dr. Root completed her orthopedic
surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York frequently chosen as the #1 Hospital for Orthopedic Surgery by US News & World
Report. Additional fellowship training to specialize in Hand, Upper Extremity and Microvascular surgery was completed at Washington University
in Saint Louis, MO.
Dr. Root focuses on problems of the upper extremity - the elbow, forearm, wrist, and hand. She treats disorders including sports injuries,
arthritis, trauma, tendonitis and congenital hand problems. Welcoming both adult and pediatric patients, Dr. Root enjoys forming relationships
with her patients taking them through the entire process from initial diagnosis through conservative treatment, and when necessary, surgical
treatment and post-operative therapy.
Dr. Root has published and presented multiple research projects on the hand and upper extremity both in the Journal of Hand Surgery and at the
annual meeting of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. She is a candidate member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and
the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Other professional memberships include the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society and Health Volunteers
Overseas. She is committed to international medical outreach, focusing on teaching hand surgery to surgeons in developing nations. Previous
service destinations have included Peru, South Africa, Nicaragua, and India.
CLAY WELLBORN, M.D.
Dr. Wellborn is a graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York. Dr. Wellborn completed his residency at George Washington University
in Washington, D.C. He has worked as general orthopaedic surgeon specializing in joint replacement surgery: minimally invasive hip and knee replacements, elbow and
shoulder joint replacements, gender-specific knee replacements, and computer navigation-based surgery. Dr. Wellborn has also treated disorders of the upper and lower
extremities with operative and non-operative modalities for all age groups and activity levels. He is dedicated to community service and has worked as the team
physician for Cabrillo High School in California.
ANDREW B. WOLFF, M.D.
Dr. Wolff is a graduate of Amherst College and Washington University School of Medicine in Saint Louis where
he received multiple awards including selection for membership in Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. He went on to complete his Orthopaedic
Surgery residency training at Yale. Dr. Wolff completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. He
regularly teaches other orthopaedic surgeons advanced techniques in hip arthroscopy both as an Associate Master Instructor of Hip Arthroscopy at
the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago and as an educational and product design consultant for hip arthroscopy for Arthrex, Inc..
Dr. Wolff has published and presented multiple research projects involving hip, knee and shoulder injuries
in journals such as the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Journal, British Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics and
the American Journal of Orthopaedics. He recently received an award by the Arthroscopy Association of North America for work he presented on hip
arthroscopy. He is a medical provider for and is on the medical advisory board of the Washington Ballet. He serves as team physician for
Marymount University athletics as well as Yorktown and Wakefield High Schools. He is currently the Treasurer of the Washington Orthopaedic
Society. He specializes in hip arthroscopy, shoulder and knee arthroscopy, cartilage restoration and sports medicine.
