Orthopedic Sportsmedicine Fellowship Program

Program Overview
The only ACGME accredited sportsmedicine fellowship program in the Greater Washington Metropolitan area. The fellowship provides exposure to and participation in the care of recreational and competitive athletes and teams at the club, high school, college, and professional level. The fellowship also provides surgical exposure with a balance between upper and lower extremity maladies.

Components of the fellowship include but are not limited to the following:

  • Evaluation and treatment of specific musculoskeletal injuries.
  • Exposure and participation in fitness evaluations and exercise prescription both in clinical and academic settings.
  • Coordinate with primary care fellows in the diagnosis and treatment of athletes with orthopedic medical conditions to include pre-participation cardiovascular risk factors, common medical ailments, and drug relationships to athletic injuries and performance.

Fellowship Term
    1-year fellowship: August 1 through July 31

Fellowship Criteria
    Follows the criteria of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons

Compensation, Vacation, & Benefits
    PGY-4 plus $1,000; two weeks vacation with additional time available for meetings and board certification obligations; and health and disability benefits.

Georgetown Hospital: Select clinical faculty 

Virginia Hospital Center, Arlington: Sportsmedicine, orthopedic, surgical   clinical, and select radiology and pathology faculty.

Athletic Exposure & Clinic Experience

  • Universities: George Mason & Marymount athletic and student health departments
  • High Schools: Yorktown, O'Connell, Paul VI, Washington & Lee, Madison, and West Springfield
  • Physical Therapy Rehabilitation: Virginia Sportsmedicine Institute
  • Professional Teams: Dependent upon faculty, contracts may include the Washington Warthogs (soccer), Washington Capitals (hockey) and the Washington Redskins (football)

Duties of the Sportsmedicine Fellow

  • To participate in the surgical activities with the orthopedic faculty including: Drs. Robert P. Nirschl, Eric J. Guidi, Patrick St. Pierre, Frank A. Pettrone, and Derek H. Ochiai.
  • To participate in all curriculums as organized by the fellowship director including clinics at George Mason and Marymount University, as well as, various on-field activities at the high school and college level.
  • To attend meetings as designated by the fellowship director including Georgetown University Orthopedic and Virginia Hospital Center Arlington Grand Rounds.
  • To participate in the educational process of Georgetown University medical students and orthopedic residents at Virginia Hospital Center Arlington and Georgetown University students and orthopedic residents as agreed upon by the fellowship director and curriculum coordinator of the Georgetown University Orthopedic Department.
  • To complete a research project for publication as mutually agreed upon by the fellowship director and the fellow.
  • To present papers at regional and, ultimately, national meetings.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be Board eligible in orthopedic surgery and are responsible for obtaining a Virginia Medical License.
  • Federal DEA # - applicants are responsible for obtaining
